If you are seeking work next summer, December is a great time to jumpstart your job search.
If you are seeking work outside of Utah, plan a trip and arrange for informational interviews with SJQ alumni; Jess, Megan & Jaclyn can help you with alumni contacts. PDO also recommends that you apply for reciprocity with other law schools to receive access to their job boards. The reciprocity form is on the PDO website, and Megan processes the requests. Email (or drop off) the reciprocity form to Megan at megan.green@law.utah.edu or by visiting PDO in room 195.
Research potential employers using resources such as the Government Honors and Internship Handbook, pslawnet.org, the law firms lists in Symplicity, martindale.com, and nalpdirectory.com. Check the Symplicity job board for jobs/internships/fellowships and Current Students link on the law school website for law school fellowships. Start your mail campaign in December, especially if you are seeking IP work, looking out of state, or have identified firms you are interested in who are not coming to OCI.
Learn the application dates and deadlines for Spring OCI. Important dates can be found by clicking HERE. Use Symplicity to see which employers are participating, and continue to check Symplicity for updates since employers have until January 18 to register. Note that you will only be able to view the employers coming for your class. Read the handouts on Symplicity that are located within the Document Library and upload your application documents into Symplicity as you finalize them.
Network! If you are a 1L, attend networking receptions that will be held in December; PDO will send details as we receive invitations. Plan to attend the S.J. Quinney College of Law Career Fair on the afternoon of Thursday, January 10 and do a mock interview during January 15-17. Also consider attending other career fairs, including the NW Public Service Career Fairs (Seattle and Portland) and the J. Reuben Clark Career Fair (Salt Lake City), both in February!
