Ruple cited in Reuters story on public land transfer

John-Ruple-2_SMS.J. Quinney College of Law Professor John Ruple was cited in an August 20, 2016 Reuters story tilted “Conservatives split over U.S. land transfers to Western states.”  As the story notes, more than 30 bills pushing for federal land transfers were introduced in Western states in 2015, more than a dozen more have been filed this year, and Republicans last month officially embraced federal-to-state land transfers in their party platform, saying it is “absurd” that so much land is under Washington’s “absentee ownership.”

Utah is at the forefront of the transfer movement, preparing for a legal battle over title to millions of acres of public land.  Professor Ruple, who has been critical of the transfer movement, opined that states have “no legal case.”  Professor Ruple and Distinguished University Professor Robert Keiter’s assessment of state legal claims can be found here.
