On May 18, 2016, Professor Randy Dryer will be speaking in Logan, Utah at the Utah State District Court Judges Annual Conference. His topic will be “ The Google Voir Dire: Practical & Ethical Concerns in Modern Jury Selection.” Courts across the country are having to face questions about the propriety of lawyer online research about jurors and prospective jurors. Several state bars have issued inconsistent ethical opinions about what lawyers may or may not ethically do and there is no accepted judicial approach to the issue. The matter is undecided in Utah. This speech will review several possible strategies that judges may employ to address the issue of juror privacy while also protecting a fair and impartial trial.
