University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law Professor Shima Baughman recently authored and published the seventh edition of Criminal Law Examples & Explanations with Richard G. Singer and John Q. La Fond.
“This book is a tool that’s extremely helpful for new law students,” Baughman said. “We go over hypothetical situations in class, but this book gives so many more on every single topic. It really helps students see how criminal law may play out in the real world.”

Baughman said she spent a year editing the volume and adding new examples that she felt would highlight criminal law topics that students would find interesting
“We want students to be able to relate to the topics, so we added new examples that mimic things that are happening in the real world,” Baughman said. “That’s the kind of thing that the new edition provides. New context to the same problems that we’ve had for years.”
Baughman was selected to author the book based on her previous publications, including her textbook, Criminal Law Case Studies & Controversies, Fourth Edition, and The Bail Book. She has taught criminal law for nine years.
Previous editions of the Criminal Law Examples & Explanations were authored by Richard G. Singer and John Q. La Fond. Baughman will continue to author new editions of the book in the future.
