Preview for Spring Recruiting

If you are seeking work next summer, December is a great time to jump-start your job search.  Begin by preparing your applications; update your résumé, cover letters, writing sample, and references.  Schedule an appointment for a résumé review with Anneliese or Kay if you haven’t met with them already.  The PDO office is open during the holiday break, although Anneliese will be out of the office December 28 to January 1.

If you are seeking work outside of Utah, plan a trip and arrange for informational interviews with SJQ alumni; Kay or Anneliese can help you with alumni contacts.  PDO also recommends that you apply for reciprocity with other law schools to receive access to their job boards.  The reciprocity form is on the PDO website, and Jaclyn processes the requests.

Research potential employers using resources such as the SLC firms list,, and  Check the Symplicity job board for jobs/internships/fellowships and the PDO Handout folder on the U drive for Diversity Fellowships.  Start your mail campaign in December, especially if you are seeking IP work, looking out of state, or have identified firms you are interested in who are not coming to OCI.

Learn the application dates and deadlines for Spring OCI.  Use Symplicity to see which employers are participating, and continue to check Symplicity for updates since employers have until January 20 to register.  Note that you will only be able to view the employers coming for your class.  Read the Symplicity Quick Guide, and upload your application documents into Symplicity as you finalize them.

Network!  If you are a 1L, attend networking receptions that will be held in December.  PDO will send details as we receive invitations, but we have included the links to two such holiday receptions in the article “3 Tips for Networking over the Winter Holidays” in this issue of the Career Brief.  Plan to attend the S.J. Quinney College of Law Career Fair on the afternoon of January 14 and do a mock interview during January 19-21.  Also consider attending other career fairs, including the NW Public Service Career Fairs (Seattle and Portland) and the J. Reuben Clark Career Fair (Salt Lake City), both in February.
