SL Trib Quotes Adler on Failed Utah-Nevada Water Deal

Apr 05, 2013 | Stegner Center

On April 5, The Salt Lake Tribune quoted Robert Adler, Professor of Law at the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law, on Utah’s decision to scuttle a deal that would have allowed Nevada to pump water from the Snake Valley aquifer, on the Utah-Nevada border, and transport it to Las Vegas via pipeline.

Adler explained that without a deal, Nevada could theoretically begin pumping water from the aquifer without Utah’s consent, thereby forcing Utah to litigate.

“It’s kind of a game of chicken going forward,” he told The Tribune. “Absent an interstate agreement, the only way to resolve the dispute is through litigation, which is uncertain for everyone.”
