Emily Chiang, Associate Professor of Law at the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law, will speak on “Reflections on Gideon at 50” at a March 15 CLE sponsored by the Utah Association for Justice.
“It’s the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Gideon v. Wainwright, mandating the provision of counsel for the indigent.,” Chiang explained. “The import of that decision cannot be overstated. Unfortunately, here in Utah, the promise of Gideon is often unmet, leaving public defense counsel without the resources they need to represent their clients and their clients without a constitutionally adequate defense.”
