University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law Dean Elizabeth Kronk Warner has appointed Shima Baradaran Baughman as Associate Dean for Faculty Research and Development.
“Shima is an exceptional scholar with great vision. I am very excited for her leadership moving forward,” said Kronk Warner.
Baughman is a professor of criminal law. She is a national expert on bail and pretrial prediction and her current scholarship examines criminal law, criminal justice policy, prosecutors, drugs, search and seizure, international law and terrorism as well as race and violent crime. Her most recently published book, “The Bail Book: A Comprehensive Look at Bail in America’s Criminal Justice System,” is the first comprehensive analysis on bail in the U.S. since 1970 and comes at a time when efforts to implement widespread bail reform across the country are gaining momentum.

In 2018, she received national attention for creating a course at the College of Law based on the Netflix documentary “Making a Murderer.”
Baughman takes the helm from RonNell Andersen Jones, who completed her service in the position on June 30.
