In April, 2020, Professor Contreras co-founded the Open COVID Pledge (OCP), a legal framework enabling organizations to contribute intellectual property to the COVID-19 response on a royalty-free basis. To date, an estimated 500,000 patents have been pledged by firms including Amazon, Facebook, HP, IBM, Intel, Microsoft and Uber, as well as the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratory. The OCP was showcased during the 2020 Lee E. Teitelbaum Utah Law Review Symposium on The Law & Ethics of Medical Research, and will be featured in an article forthcoming in the Utah Law Review.
