Christopher Peterson, John J. Flynn Endowed Professor of Law and a nationally recognized expert in consumer law, has been elected to the American Law Institute. Peterson was one of 47 legal scholars and practitioners from across the United States who were chosen to join ALI this July.
The American Law Institute is the leading organization in the United States producing scholarly work to clarify, modernize, and otherwise improve the law. Membership in ALI is highly selective.
“ALI membership is an enormous distinction for any legal scholar, and Professor Peterson’s selection is a much-deserved acknowledgement of his expertise and achievements,” said Elizabeth Kronk Warner, dean of the College of Law. “I have no doubt that his contributions will be an enormous benefit to ALI, just as his work in consumer financial protection has benefited communities across the country. More broadly, Professor Peterson’s selection is a mark of the high caliber of our faculty at Utah Law—several of whom are also members of ALI—and of the broad impact of their work.”
Peterson is a recognized authority on consumer finance. In addition to serving in various roles in the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Department of Defense during the Obama Administration, he has frequently testified in congressional hearings and presented his research to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, and the White House in both Democratic and Republican administrations.
The American Law Institute drafts, discusses, revises, and publishes Restatements of the Law, Model Codes, and Principles of Law that are influential in the courts and legislatures, as well as in legal scholarship and education. By participating in the institute’s work, its distinguished members have the opportunity to influence the development of the law in both existing and emerging areas, to work with other eminent lawyers, judges, and academics, to support the rule of law and the legal system, and to contribute to the public good.
