“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to travel with Dr. Francis to Boston and contribute in a small way to her panel presentation at the BU law symposium. It was a marvelous experience and I consider it to be one of the high points of my time in law school.

I also had the chance to sit in on another conference commemorating the 50th anniversary of Justice Blackmun’s Roe opinion, held at the Ratcliffe center, which was equally thought provoking and inspiring. I sincerely appreciate the LABS and UCEER programs and professors like Dr. Francis who provide students support to pursue scholarly research in law school.” - Meg

This quote on the wall of the SJQ Moot Courtroom serves as a constant reminder to our students and the whole legal community to continue to fight for justice.

As a law school, one of our top goals is to create an inclusive, diverse, equitable, and accessible community. As students, educators and scholars in the legal profession, we believe we have a distinct—and powerful—role to play in making our collective future better than our past.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, remembering that commitment is more important than ever. Click the link in our Stories to learn about our goals and how we’re leading change.

Medical school – not law school – was the plan Medical school – not law school – was the plan for Victoria Tomoko Carrington after she graduated with her degree in biochemistry.

But then she heard about the field of patent law, where she could use her scientific background to help advocate for the people at the forefront of innovations in the STEM fields.

“It’s so cool to get to work with inventors, the people coming up with things that no one else has ever heard of,” she said. “I think it’s incredibly important to have lawyers there, to advocate for inventors and scientists and physicians and engineers. I like to think of myself as a bridge. I want to be here to help translate what’s going on in the science world.”

During her time in law school, Victoria has worked on a research project with Professor Jorge Contreras focused on the intellectual property landscape surrounding a new Assisted Reproductive Technology called in vitro gametogenesis (IVG).

This past August, she had the chance to present the research at the Intellectual Property Scholars Conference at Stanford University.

Joe Marshall grew up in a family of lawyers – bu Joe Marshall grew up in a family of lawyers – but he did NOT want to be one himself.

Instead, he was working in community outreach at a charity organization called Movember. This non-profit focuses on men’s health issues, including mental health and suicide prevention.

Joe found this work meaningful and empowering – especially as he himself had dealt with mental health issues in the past.

Some of his projects in this role required him to work closely with the in-house counsel at Movember. Seeing the legal work at a nonprofit organization up-close changed his mind – he realized it was possible to do real, meaningful work with a law degree.

That’s what led him to apply to the S.J. Quinney College of Law.
