The Roger and Madeleine Traynor Scholarship will be awarded to a second-year law student who has demonstrated distinction in legal writing and scholarship. It encourages students to help their original insights endure by clarifying them in writing.

Madeleine Traynor established the scholarship in memory of her husband, California Supreme Court Justice Roger J. Traynor, considered by many to be one of the greatest state supreme court justices in history. Traynor was a native of Park City, Utah, and served on the California Supreme Court for 30 years (1940-1970).

Eligibility


Second-year students who have outstanding law school academic records and demonstrated excellence in legal writing and scholarship are welcome to apply. Evidence of excellence in legal writing and scholarship may include exceptional performance in the first-year legal writing program, active membership on a legal publication board, and/or a scholarly journal's article acceptance for publication.

Application requirements and selection


Applicants must complete the common application and provide the following:

  • resume
  • written personal statement (no more than 500 words) that addresses the personal qualifications required by the scholarship
  • unofficial College of Law transcript
  • writing sample

Recipient will be chosen by a committee of deans and faculty.
