EVENT DESCRIPTION:

Join us for the Annual Utah Indian Child Welfare Act Conference on December 2, 2022 at the S.J. Quinney College of Law – University of Utah! ICWA was passed in 1978 to protect Native American children, families, and communties. This conference brings together legal professionals, social workers, health professionals, state and tribal leaders, community members, and others passionate about tribal child welfare and well-being. This conference is made possible due to the generous support of the Indian Law Section of the Utah State Bar, Utah State Court, and S.J. Quinney College of Law. CLE and CEU credit pending.

9:30-10:30 am: Panel–The Role of the Judiciary in Upholding ICWA

Moderator: Sonia Sweeney (Juvenile Court Administrator, Utah State)

Panelists: Dustin Jansen (Chief Judge, Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation), Ryan Evershed (Eighth District juvenile court judge), Jeffrey Noland (Second District juvenile court judge)

10:30-11:30 am: Panel–Protecting Utah’s Children: The Need for a State ICWA
Moderator: Beth Parker (Research Associate & Stegner Fellow, S.J. Quinney College of Law)

Panelists: Lance Sorensen (Assistant Utah Attorney General), Paul Tsosie (attorney, Tsosie Law), Rupert Steele (Chairman, Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation)
