Director’s 4 Tips for Networking over the Winter Break

Whether you are staying in Utah or planning to travel for the Winter Break, plan now to do some networking.

First, check with PDO about possibly meeting with alumni in the area where you are going to be—even simply setting up a time for coffee or stopping by a firm or other office.   We can give you tips on researching alumni in the areas where you will be visiting, or in some cases even offer names of alums who are open to meeting with students.

Second, consider doing some pro bono.  1L’s, you can start participating in the Pro Bono Initiative Clinics and short term projects after your finals are done.  PBI projects can be a great way to meet local attorneys, in addition to getting experience and doing some good with your legal training.  You can see a list of available projects at this link:

Third, if you haven’t already, get in touch with your assigned mentor.

Fourth, attend a “Home for the Holidays” reception sponsored by a firm.  Over the holidays, a few law firms host “Home for the Holidays” receptions for students, often specifically for 1L’s.  These give you a chance to see their firms and network with attorneys.  If you are a 1L, these can be great ways to connect with attorneys at firms and do some easy networking in cities where you might want to work.  Listed below are some of these receptions.  Dress for these is your nicest business casual—slacks or skirts and blouses or sweaters for women; slacks and collared shirts—possibly with a sweater and/or separate jacket for men.  Note that you need to RSVP for any Snell & Wilmer reception by December 15, to Ms. Kara Blakey at
