Basic Mediation Training
Mediation is both a career path and an invaluable personal and professional skill. The Basic Mediation Training will empower you to move from conflict to common good as you apply best practices in mediation to your personal and professional worlds.
Who the course is for:
Everyone in the community, including non-lawyers and lawyers. No specific educational or professional background is necessary to become a mediator.

Certification/Badging:
This course is a court-qualified basic mediation training. The course provides at least 40 hours of mediation training and fulfills the educational portion of the requirements in order to be listed as a mediator on the Utah Court Basic Mediation Roster. NOTE: In addition to the course, individuals wishing to be listed on the roster must meet other requirements, including 20 hours of practical training and completing an online ethics exam. Information regarding how to complete these additional requirements is provided in class.
This course is an 8-week course, with a final capstone project occurring after the last class. Classes meet over Zoom on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for 8 weeks. Course Dates and Time Commitment:
The course is for anyone in the community, and is often pursued by social workers, therapists, educators, members of law enforcement, human resource professionals, managers, government employees, attorneys, and parents, to name just a few.
Participants will be required to complete two to three hours of coursework in preparation for each class, complete a final capstone project, and participate in a 30-minute meeting with the instructor after after the final class. Total instruction hours including self study is 45-50 hrs..

The Basic Mediation Training offers the following personal and professional skills:
- Listening skills
- Asking good questions
- Finding interests versus positions
- Deescalating conflict
- Helping people develop multiple options for resolution
- Risk analysis
- Negotiation skills
- Dealing with difficult negotiators
For those wishing to pursue mediation professionally, this course also includes:
- How to become rostered by the court
- How to conduct a formal mediation process
- How to work with attorneys in mediation
- Mediator ethics
- Aspects of running your own mediation business
- Tips for mediating online versus in person
- This is only one of two court-approved online basic mediation trainings in the state of Utah.
Other Information:
This course does not qualify for U of U employee tuition reduction or emeritus discount benefits.
