The Utah Center for Legal Inclusion (UCLI) named rising 3L Bree Spaulding a Durham Fellow for the 2023-2024 school year.
Originally from California, Spaulding noticed Utah’s lack of diversity and some inequities when she came to the S.J. Quinney College of Law in 2021. She worked at the Disability Law Center and recently completed a field study program at Lambda Legal, a civil rights organization that helps lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities through public policy work, education, and litigation, in Chicago.
Spaulding notes that her experiences made her more committed to advocating for marginalized communities, and she plans to pursue a career in public interest law.
Named in honor of Justice Christine Durham (former Utah Supreme Court justice and current UCLI co-chair) the Durham Fellowship recognizes law students who show a demonstrated commitment to furthering justice and inclusiveness in Utah’s legal profession. UCLI awards the fellowship to two law students each year, one from each of Utah’s two law schools, and it includes a stipend that can be used toward tuition, housing and other living expenses. Durham Fellows also partner with UCLI staff and committees to facilitate and improve law school programs and scholarships.
