Whether liberal or conservative, political extremists have used the federal public lands of the American West to make dramatic statements in support of their respective causes. Please join our distinguished panelists as they discuss the challenges to upholding the rule of law in the face of political extremism on our public lands.
SPEAKERS:
Jared C. Bennett, United States Magistrate Judge in the District of Utah
Jared C. Bennett graduated Order of the Coif from the University of Utah College of Law in 2001, earned a Certificate in Environmental and Natural Resources Law, and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Utah. From 2001-2002, Jared clerked for the Honorable Pamela T. Greenwood on the Utah Court of Appeals. In 2002, Jared was hired as an Honor’s Program Attorney for the Solicitor’s Office in United States Department of the Interior.
In 2005, Jared was hired as an Assistant United States Attorney at the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah in the United States Department of Justice. In August 2017, United States Attorney John W. Huber appointed Jared to serve as the First Assistant United States Attorney for the United States Attorney’s Office, District of Utah. In January 2020, Jared was selected to serve as a United States Magistrate Judge in the District of Utah. He began his judicial service in May 2020.
Kate Groetzinger, Communications Manager, Center for Western Priorities
Kate joined the Center for Western Priorities in July 2021 after two years at Utah’s statewide public radio station, KUER, as its Southeast Utah bureau reporter. In that role, she covered Bears Ears National Monument and public land management issues extensively. She now co-hosts the Center for Western Priorities’ podcast, The Landscape, in addition to managing the Center’s social media and press inquiries. She works remotely from Salt Lake City. On the weekends, she enjoys hiking in the canyons around Salt Lake, thrifting, walking her dog Tony, swimming, and skiing.
John Huber, Shareholder, Greenberg Traurig
John Huber is a statured leader with over 26 years of litigation experience. Over the course of his career John has personally tried hundreds of civil and criminal cases to verdict, including personally trying 11 cases to jury verdict and supervising and directing 30+ others in Federal Court. Having served as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Utah from 2015-2021, John was the longest-tenured active U.S. Attorney in the United States for four years. First nominated by President Obama and later re-nominated by President Trump, he was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate both times. During his tenure, John was entrusted with sensitive investigations that were the subject of intense scrutiny on the national stage. He is known for productivity and his ability to build teams and solutions to meet complex challenges.
