The Roger and Madeleine Traynor Scholarship will be awarded to a second year law student who has demonstrated distinction in legal writing and scholarship. The purpose of this merit scholarship is to encourage law students to give endurance to their original insights by clarifying them in writing.

The Roger and Madeleine Traynor Scholarship was established in memory of Justice Traynor and in honor of his wife Madeleine by a generous gift from her. California Supreme Court Justice Roger J. Traynor is considered by many to be one of the greatest state Supreme Court justices in history. He was a native of Park City, Utah, and served on the California Supreme Court for thirty years (1940-1970).

Second-year students who have outstanding law school academic records and demonstrated excellence in legal writing and scholarship. Evidence of excellence in legal writing and scholarship may include exceptional performance in the first year legal writing program, active membership on a legal publication board, and/or acceptance of an article for publication by a scholarly journal.

Application Requirements and Selection

Applicants must complete the Common App and provide the following:

• a resume
• a written personal statement (no more than 500 words) that addresses the personal qualifications required by the scholarship
• an unofficial College of Law transcript
• a writing sample may be requested

Recipient will be chosen by a committee of deans and faculty.
